It’s the first of the month and this is by far our favorite time. A new month means a fresh start and an opportunity to improve. We start every single month by setting goals, mapping out our business plan and choosing an area of personal growth we want to focus on.
We absolutely thrive on goals! Having benchmarks, checkpoints and something to work towards keeps us focused and motivated. Goals, when set correctly, can fuel your fire. However, goals can also overwhelm us and seem impossible if set incorrectly.
One of the biggest mistakes we make when setting goals is stopping at one broad and general idea. This month you set a goal: I will increase sales by 20%. That’s great! But this is where most people stop. That’s a mistake! How are you going to increase sales? What actions will you take? How will you know it’s working?
Increasing sales by twenty percent is an excellent lag goal. A lag goal is an ultimate destination and it often revolves around numbers. Some examples are:
-I will lose 50 pounds.
-I will increase engagement on my page.
-I will add 20 new customers.
Most people stop after setting a lag goal without realizing there is a whole other component to this process. You need lead goals! Lead goals or actions are the daily tasks that turn your lag goal into a reality.
If you want to increase your sales, what are the daily actions that will help you get there? Asking yourself this question helps you form lead actions. Lead goals and actions are the absolute key to success.
Let’s break this down!
Lag Goal:
I will increase sales by 20%.
Lead Goals/Actions:
-I will post about my products once a day.
-I will create a Facebook Ad for a product and launch it within one week.
-I will reach out to two new people every day.
-I will follow up with one past customer a day to see if they need any help or products.
-I will launch a newsletter for my customers and include a coupon.
Now you are no longer aimlessly working towards a goal that seems impossible. You have concrete steps and actions to take that WILL get you to your ultimate goal.
