How to Rediscover Your Why

Before all the work, meetings, building, growing, stressing and constant hustle that comes with owning your own business you had a "why". There was a reason you took this giant step into the unknown. In the beginning it was clear. When you started it was the fuel for your fire. However, as time moves on it is easy to loose sight of it.

When trials come in your business, trust me they will come, your why is what will keep you grounded. It's the teather that holds you to your dream and reminds you why throwing the towel in is simply not an option. But what do you do when you loose sight of your why? What do you do if you've actually never been sure of what you why is?

It's time to dig my friends.

Ask yourself why.

Sit down with a pen and paper and ask yourself why you started this journey. Why did you want to be a business owner? Why did you choose this instead of working for someone else? Why did you choose your particular business?

Write down everything that pops in to your head, even if it doesn't make sense. When you are finished look over what you have. Is there a common theme to your answers? If so you've probably discovered your why!

Now go deeper.

Once you've discovered a common theme it is easy to stop there and assume you know your why. Or if you've always known you why it's easy to think there is nothing more to be discovered. You're wrong! There is almost always more to our why than we realize. Now is the time to figure it out.

Keep asking why!

Why did I start my business? To make money.

Why did I want to make money? To provide for my family.

Why do I want to provide for my family? I want them to have a secure future.

Why do I want their future to be secure? I never want them to worry about how the bills are going to be paid of if we will have food...I don't want them to be scared.

Do you see what I'm getting at here? As you continue down this road you are going to have an "AHA!" moment. There will be a moment where one of your answers speaks to your soul and you realize that you have finally found the true motivation behind your choices. This is an empowering moment!

Make it unforgettable.

Now that you know why you are doing what you are doing, make sure you never forget it. Write it on an index card and tape it to your mirror. Make it part of your morning meditations. Incorporate it into your office so you see it while you work. Find a way to make your why a part of your daily life. Hold on to it. Let it fuel your fire!
