As stay at home moms, the isolation and overall exhaustion can leave us feeling depressed and feeling alone and overwhelmed. These feelings were exactly what Sarah of, The Boxy Momma Company, used as she created this business that fulfills her dreams of creating support system and a sisterhood of stay at home moms around the country.
The vision Sarah and The Boxy Momma Co. has is to make stay at home moms feel appreciated and by giving the gifts of self care to moms who give, give, give all day {and night} to their families. Tell us about yourself.
I'm Sarah Cunningham, I'm a wife and mother of three little boys (5 1/2, 2 1/2, and 17 months) I've been a stay at home mom for about three years now. It's very hard and challenging but rewarding to be home all day with them! I love photography, shopping and saving money. I've been a big "couponer" and "sweepstaker" in years past, those were big hobbies of mine before I started my business.
How did you get into your business?
Sweepstakes and depression were my big enablers for getting into business. I realized how great it feels to open your door and have a surprise sitting there waiting for you. I also realized there just isn't enough out there that reminds moms how awesome they are. They are not alone and they have someone else out there that can relate, so I created The Boxy Momma Company, a monthly reward box for moms! The idea just popped into my head one day and I rolled with it. I started spending lots of time researching online how to start a subscription box, starting a business and becoming an entrepreneur.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Time management. Finding a good balance between taking care of the family and devoting enough time to our business and finding ways to actually get new sales.
What do you wish you’d known when you started?
I wish I would have saved a little more money prior to launching and spent a longer amount of time building an e-mail list.
If you could narrow your success down to one thing, what would it be?
My family is everything, I want to be a good mom and watch my children thrive and become successful, confident and caring human beings. In the business world, I want to make all the mommas out there happy, I want to take them out of that feeling of isolation and find new ways to create friendships.
Where do you see yourself in a year?
In a year, I see myself growing our business and creating a whole new online gift box store, we want to expand and create boxes for dads, women, teachers, nurses, and much more. What are your top three tips for women starting a business?
Make sure you have enough financially before you start, have a good base for your business. DO YOUR RESEARCH! Research your niche, competitors, pricing, everything! Compare and contrast. Don't lose hope, don't let a negative comment or review deter you from continuing to grow and flourish, and being a mom and a business woman IS possible!
What is a typical day for you like?
A typical day for me is waking up before the kids wake up to get an hour or so of work done, creating ads for the day/week to post, sending out emails, etc. The kids wake up and I jump into my stay at home mom duties, cooking, cleaning, the whole nine yards; nap time I jump back into my work for a couple hours and then resume again at bedtime until I'm falling asleep in front of my laptop! lol
What’s your business motto or quote you live by?
Don't give up! Don't let anyone make you feel like you CAN'T do it. Use it to drive yourself to become even more successful and prove the non-believers wrong!
If you were starting your business over again, what would you do differently?
If I could start over again I would have saved a little more money and grew my email list before launch, don't feel so pressured to jump right into it.
